Frequently Asked Questions
NanoDeck™ is a modular solar energy platform developed specifically for ships, transforming suitable deck and other flat surfaces into renewable energy-generating assets.
NanoDeck™ has been designed specifically for the marine environment rather than adapting conventional land-based panels for use at sea. It is modular, walkable and engineered around the realities of working vessels.
NanoDeck™ can contribute towards onboard electrical demand including accommodation, navigation equipment, machinery and other auxiliary loads. The exact contribution depends on the vessel and installation.
Yes. NanoDeck™ has been designed for both retrofit and newbuild applications, with its modular architecture allowing installations to be configured around individual vessels.
Vessels with suitable available deck or flat surface area can potentially benefit. Bulk carriers, PCTCs/RoRos and other vessels with significant usable surface area can be particularly interesting applications. Suitability is assessed vessel by vessel.
There is no single answer. It depends on available surface area, shading, vessel energy demand, trading pattern and the customer’s objectives. Send us your vessel details and we can assess the opportunity.
Potentially, yes. Cargo operations, loading requirements, access and vessel configuration all need to be considered as part of the engineering assessment.
Hazardous-area applications require additional technical and certification considerations. NanoDeck™ is currently going through the ATEX certification process, which is expected to be finalised by mid-2027. Contact us with the vessel type and proposed installation area, and we can discuss the requirements.
This is vessel-specific and depends on installed capacity, electrical demand, operating profile, geography and solar conditions. We can model the potential fuel, emissions and financial savings for an individual vessel.
Yes. Performance naturally varies according to location, season, weather, shading and vessel operation, which is why we assess each opportunity individually rather than applying one generic solar assumption.
There is no universal figure. Payback depends on installation size, energy generated, displaced fuel cost, vessel utilisation, trading pattern and the commercial value of avoided emissions. We can provide a vessel-specific commercial assessment.
By reducing the electricity that needs to be generated from fuel onboard, NanoDeck™ can reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions. Depending on the vessel and trade, this can contribute towards areas such as CII, FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS exposure and wider ESG/decarbonisation objectives.
NanoDeck™ uses a distributed architecture with multiple levels of redundancy, designed so that damage to an individual tile does not necessarily prevent the wider system from continuing to generate electricity. Individual tiles can easily be replaced by crew in minutes.
Yes. NanoDeck™ is fuel-agnostic and designed to complement batteries, alternative fuels, wind assistance and other energy-saving technologies as part of a wider vessel energy and decarbonisation strategy.
Yes. Our Test Before You Invest approach allows customers to evaluate NanoDeck™ on an operational vessel, gather real-world performance data and use that evidence before considering wider fleet deployment.
